On Friday 18 April 2025, churches across East Oxford came together to celebrate the holy and solemn occasion of Good Friday – a day Christians across the world remember the story of Jesus’ sacrifice in giving up His life on the cross. The event included hymns sung a capella, reflections from different ministers, prayers, and periods of silent reflection, and follows a route from the forecourt at Cowley Road Methodist Church to the graveyard at St Mary St John Church, with stops en route.
The event was supported by 90+ members from 11 churches, including Cowley Road Methodist Church (the English and Punjabi congregations), Greyfriars, Magdalen Road Church, Oxford Christadelphians, St Alban’s, St Clement’s, St James, St Francis, St Mary St John, St Stephen’s House, and Wesley Memorial Church. This year’s event was organised jointly by the two churches mentioned above.
The event has been going for over 20 years, excluding a short break during the COVID pandemic. It’s hoped that this event will continue on the morning of Good Friday for many years to come. For more details about next year’s event, contact parish@cowleystjohn.co.uk.
