Knit, Crochet or Draw for Peace

knit for peace

The charity Knit for Peace grew out of a project developed in Rwanda, which brought together women of traditionally hostile communities (Hutu and Tutsi) to knit items of clothes. The knitters were paid and the clothes were distributed to street children and orphans.

The charity has grown and grown, and there are now thousands of knitters. People and their differences come together as they sit, knit and crochet, and help others in need. Finished items are sent to hundreds of places including hospitals, women's refuges, prisons, hospices and refugee camps. Receiving something handmade is very special.

So please come along to Woodstock Methodist Church, bring your size 8 (4mm) needles and hooks (4mm), and help Knit for Peace. We aim to make two large blankets – one knitted, one crocheted. They will be made up of simple 6-inch squares (wool will be provided). If you would prefer to come and knit or crochet something else, either for the charity or to give to a friend, that would also be brilliant.

Besides the knitting, there will be opportunity to illustrate greeting cards, using simple instructions for drawing and colouring. Card makers can choose where to send then as an act of encouragement to friends or people in need.

Tea, coffee and cake will be available for knitters, crocheters, card makers and anyone else who would just like to call in for a chat.

If you can't make this particular date, we will also be meeting again on Monday 7 Oct and Monday 4 Nov at 2 to 4 pm.
